Version 1 Athena, Goddess of Wisdom and War, and Her Attribute the Owl, (455-449 B.C.) Classic Greek Tetradrachm. Size 24 mm. OBVERSE: Head of Athena wearing a crested helmet with olive leaves and floral scroll. REVERSE: Owl with olive branch and crescent within incuse square.
Version 2. The Crescent moon represents the night and the owl’s wisdom to see in the dark. The Olive Branch, symbolizes Athena’s peaceful victory over Poseidon. The letters AOE is an abbreviation for “of Athenians”
Version 3. This is the new Style of Athena and the Owl 133-132 B.C., 29 mm,12 g. This style retains the Athena and owl iconography of earlier Owls but change in styling dramatically, becoming considerably more elaborate. Size 29 mm. Obverse: Athena with triple-crested Helmet
Reverse: Owl standing on Amphora.
The New Style Owls retain the Athena and owl iconography of earlier Owls but change in styling dramatically, becoming considerably more elaborate. Athena now wears a triple-crested helmet, with the helmet crest typically appearing in full on the flan, which is larger and wider than with earlier Owls in conformity with other coins of this period. The owl also now sits on an amphora (jug), which refers to Athens' international olive oil trade, and is surrounded by an olive wreath. It is new only in that, as the Roman Empire expanded, Athens found itself under Roman rule and the coin designs changed a little. The 'gladiator' is really a helmeted version of the Greek goddess Athena, goddess of wisdom, courage, inspiration, civilization, law and justice, just warfare, mathematics, strength, strategy, the arts, crafts, and skill. The 'eagle' is really an owl, standing on an 'urn' or amphora which is symbol of the city of Athens even to this day, as seen in the Greek 10 lepta coin from 1912.
These are REPLICA, REPRODUCTION Coins. The engravings showing the coin in new, non-circulated condition. They are accurately detailed, using museum quality authentic ancient coins as models. They are accurate in size and imagery. The Coins are cast in the finest quality, solid pewter. If you enjoy ancient history and Greek and Roman Mythology, you will enjoy these coins.
