Arnholz Hot Chocolate - Arnolz Coffee Co. - 1927 to 1930\'s era - Very Rare – Art-Deco Side Logo -Shenango China - Tulip Designed - Tapered Restaurant MugOffered for your consideration is an ultra rare 1927 to 1930\'s era side logo 3 1/2\" by 4 1/4\" wide (from the side of the handle across to the opposite side of the top rim) pedestal base - tulip flower designed - tapered sides and base - ultra rare restaurant mug made by the Shenango China Co. for the Arnholz Coffee Company for their Arnholz Hot Chocolate.
In the past many years of collecting, I have only seen just a few these most rarest type Shenango Inca Ware tapered restaurant mugs made to advertise Arnholz Hot Chocolate in this most beautiful shape and stunning art-deco side logo. The type of mug, which some refer to as a \"tulip\" design, is also rare in itself.
There is also a good chance these may have been a sample piece or were made on a very limited bases. I\'m positive not many of these were ever made and even fewer ever survived over the past close to 100 years.
This piece would have been used at a diner, cafe, restaurant, hotel, etc., to advertise Arnholz Hotel Chocolate. Again, there is also a chance this mug may have been part of a small pre-production run - sample piece made for review by the Arnholz family and executives in Wichita. Some of the advertisements thus far that had the establishment\'s name, along with, the Arnolz name included the famous Hart\'s Lunch Co. in California; Buck\'s Grill in Hill City, Kansas; the Zongker Drug Store in Wichita, and many others.
Historically, the Arnholz Coffee Company was founded in February of 1915 by Robert Arnolz in Wichita, Kansas, primarily as a coffee distribution / wholesale company that went on to provide sales to the Southwest area of the United States, including Kansas, California, Utah, New Mexico, Texas, and others. Arnholz prided in offering some of the finest coffee available primarily to hotels, restaurants, diners, and cafes, along with, making deliveries to residences in Wichita (and the surrounding areas) for coffees, teas, and spices. The company\'s original and first address as 133 N. Lawrence in Wichita (with Lawrence becoming renamed as Broadway Street by the 1920\'s).
In 1921, the company boosted a proud workforce that was comprised of Lusile Judy; Paul Boston; Alvin Heath; Earl Van Kirk; John Bowers, Kenneth Fitch; Guy Vaugh, along with, the owner and manager; Robert Arnholz. By this time, they were providing residential services in the Wichita area. But also at the same time, had expanded their wholesale distribution hotel - restaurant operations to other cities and towns in Kansas, along with, Oklahoma. In addition to coffee, teas, etc., they also were a supplier of grocery supplies as well.
By the late 1920\'s, Arnholz not only had their headquarters and main distribution center in Wichita, but they also had a large operation in Amarillo, Texas. Their products were sold under the Arnholz name and packaged. At some of the hotels, restaurants, diners, and cafes, the establishments proudly advertised on their matchbook covers, menus, and so forth, that they offered their patrons and diners Arnolz coffee and other items. It appears the company operated a company lunch room - cafeteria also at the Broadway Street location as well. Sometime during this era, \"Supply Co.\" was added to now include the Arnholz Coffee Supply Co.
On March 22nd, 1943, Robert Arnholz suddenly passed of a massive heart attack. His namesake successful coffee company continued though under the direction of his wife and his family, which the company continued to expand and thrive. By 1951, the company moved to their new then modern Arnholz Coffee Building at 920 E. 1st Street (at 1st and Washington) in downtown Wichita. In addition to offices, warehousing, and operations, the company operated a then modern cafe - lunch room, which was not only available to its staff, but to the community as well. Civic groups even meet their for their luncheon meetings.
In 1961, the Amarillo warehouse suffered a major fire that resulted in almost a total loss of the distribution center there. In that same time, the company also had their Denver, Colorado, distribution center and offices as well at 641 S. Jason Street. Sometime by the late 1970\'s, it appears the company had ceased operations; being either sold or just closed. Their newer office building and warehouse at 1st and Washington became the Alford Electric Company in 1980.
This mug is the vintage heavyweight type steamship, cafe - lunch room, and hotel china. Again, this is a very very rare design in itself, along with, it being made advertising ARNHOLZ HOT CHOCOLATE. It was made by the Shenango China Co. in New Castle, Pennsylvania, and has their 1927 to early 1940\'s era Inca Ware backstamp. It is a tan base with maroon - reddish pin-striping and black art-deco lettering. It has no cracks, no chips, and in stunning condition for its age.
