Arlette Permanent Wave Shop Fayetteville NC Prince Charles Vintage RPPC Postcard

Getting your hair curled in the Roaring Twenties meant booking an appointment at a ground floor hotel salon and keeping company with the resident shop bird while waiting for the permanent wave machine to warm up. This original real photo postcard captures the exterior masonry storefront of the Arlette Permanent Wave Shop inside the Prince Charles Hotel in Fayetteville, North Carolina. Framed beneath three tall arched fanlight windows with decorative zigzag borders, the shop displays matching scroll signs reading The Arlette Permanent Wave Shop topped by a full peacock with fanned tail feathers in both main windows.

Inspecting the sharp silver gelatin glass reflections reveals an upholstered hydraulic salon chair with a white porcelain lever handle and a domed wire birdcage with a perched bird sitting on a white table inside the left window. The center window showcases an arched wicker chair and lace draped vanity mirror behind a sill packed with glass tonic bottles, cream jars, boxed manicure sets, and counter signs reading All Work Guaranteed and Our Best Ad Is A Satisfied Customer. Lettered directly into the negative along the lower margin is the full business title, Prince Charles Hotel location, Phone 1200 contact number, and Fayetteville N.C. address. The reverse features an unposted AZO stamp box with four corner squares, dating this view to the late 1920s shortly after the hotel opened. The card shows light corner wear, mild age toning, and a few minor surface marks on the back.

As an authentic vintage piece, this item may show typical signs of age, which can include minor edge wear, soft or bumped corners, slight yellowing, and light surface blemishes. Please carefully examine all provided high-resolution photos for the most accurate and definitive representation of the item\'s condition prior to purchasing.Trivia Corner

Construction on Fayetteville\'s seven story Prince Charles Hotel began in 1923, and the landmark opened in April 1925 on Hay Street across from the Atlantic Coast Line Railroad depot as the tallest building in downtown Fayetteville. The Arlette salon operated on the ground level along the 400 block of Hay Street for decades, appearing in historical Fayetteville city directories as the Arlette Beauty Shop under managers Margaret Canady and Clara B. Downing. Customers dialing Phone 1200 in the late 1920s sat beneath early electrical permanent wave machines that used alkaline solutions and heated metal rods to set curls.
