Antique Circa 1910s NEBO & Zira Cigarette Tobacco Silk Folk Art Quilt / Textile

Outstanding early-20th-century hand-sewn textile assembled from approximately 25 antique tobacco/cigarette premium silks, including clearly identified examples issued for NEBO and Zira Cigarettes.

The colorful premiums depict international flags, coats of arms, national songs and women representing countries of the world. Countries represented include England, France, Denmark, Norway, Holland, Ireland, Poland, Mexico, China, Japan, Brazil, Montenegro and others.

Several individual silks retain their original cigarette advertising and period factory markings.

A particularly attractive Denmark silk is clearly marked “NEBO CIGARETTES” and depicts the Danish flag together with musical notation, flowers and lyrics beneath the heading “DANISH NATIONAL HYMN.”

The large England female figure is visibly marked “ZIRA CIGARETTES.” Additional pieces retain early New Jersey tobacco-factory markings, including “Factory No. 21, 5th Dist. N.J.”

These decorative silks were originally distributed as collectible cigarette premiums during the early-20th-century tobacco-silk collecting craze. Rather than remaining as individual premiums, this collection was hand stitched together into a wonderful surviving piece of period textile folk art.

Measures approximately 18” × 18”.

Antique condition with expected age-related wear including discoloration, staining/spotting, fading, fraying, loose threads and irregular hand stitching. The reverse shows additional staining and the original handmade construction. Please examine all photographs carefully.

No attempt has been made to clean, repair or restore the textile.
