Beautiful early 19th-century English Staffordshire Stone China covered serving tureen with matching underplate or stand, dating to approximately the 1820s to early 1830s.
The piece is richly decorated in an Imari-inspired palette of deep cobalt blue, salmon, pink, turquoise, green, iron red, and gilt. The domed lid features an especially attractive molded fruit or floral-bud finial surrounded by applied leaves. A large opening along the side of the lid was made for a serving ladle.
The underside of the lid bears a very faint impressed maker\'s mark. The clearest portion appears to be a prominent letter \"R,\" with additional faint letters or symbols surrounding it. Research into the form, decoration, age, and mark suggests a possible association with the Ridgway family of Staffordshire potters, potentially John & William Ridgway or early John Ridgway production. Because the mark cannot be conclusively identified, I am describing the piece as attributed to Ridgway rather than definitively marked Ridgway.
There is also a small hand-painted ochre mark on the underside, likely a decorator\'s, workman\'s, or production mark.
This is a substantial and visually impressive approximately 200-year-old English serving piece. The matching stand measures approximately 12 inches across.
The lid has a significant old loss to a portion of the interior seating flange near the ladle opening. This damage is primarily underneath the lid and is largely concealed when the piece is assembled.
There is also a short hairline crack extending inward from the rim of the lid with a small associated chip or glaze loss at the edge.
Extensive age-related crazing is present throughout. The matching stand has noticeable tan or tea-colored staining in the central well. There is additional age discoloration, scattered gilt and enamel wear, minor rim fritting, glaze loss, surface wear, shelf wear, and small firing imperfections.
The molded finial remains intact overall with age-related wear to the decoration.
I do not see a major through-crack in the matching stand.
Despite the condition issues, the piece remains extremely attractive and displays beautifully when assembled.
