Sometimes the smallest mark tells the biggest story. This beautiful Bavarian piece might catch your eye with its hand-painted roses, but look underneath and you\'ll find the intriguing little “Alex” signature—a wonderful reminder that antique treasures often have another story waiting to be discovered.
Beautiful antique covered porcelain vanity or trinket box made by Zeh, Scherzer & Co. of Bavaria, Germany. The rounded box features hand-painted pink roses and foliage against an unusual softly blended ground of green, brown, pink and pale lavender.
The underside bears the green Z.S. & Co. Bavaria factory mark as well as a hand-painted artist signature reading “Alex.”
Research indicates that “Alex” was a documented signature used by Ruth Alexander, an artist associated with Pickard China during the early 20th century. Documented Pickard porcelain signed “Alex” has been attributed to Ruth Alexander and includes hand-painted rose decoration. The distinctive oversized, stylized A in the signature on this piece also compares closely with examples attributed to Alexander.
The Z.S. & Co. Bavaria mark is associated with Zeh, Scherzer & Co. porcelain of the 1880–1918 period, and the piece likely dates to the early 20th century, approximately the 1910s.
