Antique Austrian Vienna Cold-Painted Bronze European Greenfinch c. 1880–1915

Offered is an exceptional antique Austrian Vienna cold-painted bronze depicting a European Greenfinch (Chloris chloris). This beautifully modeled bronze displays remarkable naturalism, finely hand-chased feather detail, and retains its original cold-painted surface with honest wear consistent with well over a century of age.

This bird came from the same estate collection as several signed J. Csadek Vienna bronzes, including a signed pair of woodcocks and a signed pheasant, suggesting it originated from a collection of high-quality Austrian bronzes assembled over many years.

The sculpture features several characteristics associated with quality late 19th- and early 20th-century Viennese production, including:

• Finely hand-chased feather detail.
• Original cold-painted finish with natural age wear.
• Hollow cast construction.
• Hand-finished casting seams.
• A worn, partially legible mark that appears to end with the letter “Y,” although the complete inscription can no longer be read.
• Distinctive yellow wing and tail markings consistent with the European Greenfinch.

The workmanship, quality of the casting, and age of the finish suggest production during the golden age of Austrian Vienna bronzes, approximately 1880–1915.

Attribution

Although no complete readable maker’s mark survives, the quality and style are consistent with fine Viennese workshop production of the period. Because of its apparent age and craftsmanship, the piece may have originated from one of the important Vienna bronze workshops active during the late nineteenth century, including workshops associated with the Bergmann family, but no definitive attribution can be made without a readable maker’s mark or documented model match.

Collectors of antique Vienna bronzes will recognize the influence of workshops established by Franz Bergmann Sr. (founder of the Bergmann foundry in Vienna in 1860) and later expanded by Franz Xavier Bergmann, whose workshops helped establish Vienna as the center of cold-painted bronze production. This sculpture is offered as an authentic antique Austrian Vienna bronze and not as a definitively attributed Bergmann example.
