Presenting an investment-grade, museum-tier treasure for advanced collectors of 19th-century vanity history and fine Gilded Age attire: an authentic early Victorian heavy fire-gilded desk-seal style hatpin.
This fire-gilded Gothic "K" seal pin is a true masterpiece of early Victorian craftsmanship!
Design & Historical Craftsmanship
Dating from the peak of the mid-19th-century Rococo Revival era (c. 1840–1860), this exceptional piece was modeled directly after a classical hand-held wax letter seal. The heavy decorative head features an architectural openwork gallery formed by thick, robustly sculpted C-scroll pillars, naturalistic acanthus leaves, and raised decorative bead accents.
The oval signet face features a magnificent, deep hand-bright-cut monogram executing the Gothic Old English letter "K". The interior curves of the initial are embellished with intricate master-engraved zig-zag hatching designed to shimmer vividly under candlelight. The head is masterfully struck in solid brass and heavily coated in an authentic period fire-gilding wash, yielding an incredibly rich, reflective buttery luster. The base of the head terminates in a heavy, multi-tiered ring collar that locks cleanly into its original 7-1/2 inch steel stem.
Condition Report
Superb, choice antique condition. The 7-1/2 inch steel stem remains perfectly rigid, straight, and exceptionally strong, tapering cleanly to a sharp point. The heavy gilded ornament head is free of compression damage, dents, or deep scratches, preserving the master-engraved lines perfectly. The genuine period fire-gilded gold layer is beautifully preserved across the main face and outer scrollwork, showing only authentic, rich charcoal-black carbon tarnish and deep estate patina nestled within the low points and reverse solder joints. Completely unpolished to retain its 170-year-old historic integrity.

🌟 Market Research & Valuation Report
• Design Elements & Motif: This is a spectacular Georgian to Early Victorian Rococo Revival desk-seal style hatpin, dating from circa 1840–1860. The design replicates a classical hand-held wax letter seal, featuring a heavy, deeply sculpted scrolling frame. Unlike the previous piece which featured a delicate, transitional openwork geometric cage, this finding is an authentic split-scroll openwork gallery adorned with robust, three-dimensional
acanthus flourishes and raised bead groupings.
• The Hand-Engraved Monogram: The oval matrix face features a highly artistic, professional hand-engraved Gothic Script initial. Reviewing both orientations, the first image is the correct perspective. The letter is a beautifully executed Gothic Old English "K". The deep, hand-bright-cut incisions feature fine cross-hatched zig-zag texture within the main body curves to catch the light—a hallmark of true Master Engraver artistry.
• Materials & Construction: Your assessment regarding the quality is entirely correct. This head is crafted from thick, solid brass that has been finished in a premium heavy fire-gilding (ormolu / mercury gold plate). This accounts for the remarkably bright, rich, buttery yellow-gold survival. The "black spots" around the crevasses are a highly prized, authentic accumulation of oxidized copper-carbonate and carbon tarnish built up over nearly 170 years. It features a heavy steel stem measuring 7-1/2 inches, cleanly soldered to a multi-ringed collar base, bringing the total composition to 8-1/2 inches.
