Antique Toonerville Trolley Slush Cast Metal Toy 1922 Fontaine Fox Comic Strip Antique Toonerville Trolley Slush Cast Metal Toy 1922 Fontaine Fox Comic Strip Description

Topdog Presents: Always Interesting Stuff!

Offered here is an antique slush cast metal Toonerville Trolley, one of the small penny-toy-grade souvenirs of what was, for nearly half a century, one of the most beloved comic strips in America. The trolley is finished in its original green paint with gilt lettering reading TOONERVILLE across the roof band and a second gilt destination panel below the windows, with dark trim picking out the roof edges, window arches and platform railings. Cast figures stand on both open platforms, and the roof carries the trolley\'s characteristic crooked stack and pole fitting. The wheels are painted red. It is 3\" tall and 3\" long.

Fontaine Fox launched Toonerville Folks in the Chicago Post in 1908, and the Wheeler Syndicate took it national in 1913. It ran until 1955. The strip was a single-panel gag feature about a fictional small town of memorable eccentrics, among them the Terrible-Tempered Mr. Bang, the Powerful Katrinka, Aunt Eppie Hogg and the neighborhood bully Mickey McGuire, but the character everyone remembers is the vehicle itself. The Toonerville Trolley That Meets All the Trains was a swaybacked, rattletrap streetcar driven at reckless speed by a whiskered old codger known only as the Skipper, forever careening off to meet the commuter train. Fox drew it perpetually crooked, and that lopsided silhouette became one of the most recognizable images in American popular culture. By the 1920s it had jumped from newsprint into live-action films, animated cartoons, and a flood of licensed merchandise.

Fox copyrighted the trolley likeness in 1922, and that date opened the floodgates. Dent Hardware Company of Fullerton, Pennsylvania produced the well-known cast iron version distributed by George Borgfeldt of New York, German makers turned out tin windups and tiny lithographed penny toys, and American slush casters produced small lead-alloy versions like this one for the five-and-dime and prize trades. Slush casting, in which molten alloy is poured into a mold and the still-liquid center poured back out to leave a hollow shell, was the cheap domestic answer to imported diecast, and the Kansas Toy & Novelty Company of Clifton, Kansas was the best-known American maker working in the technique during the 1920s and 1930s. Slush Toonerville Trolleys of this type are commonly attributed to Kansas Toy & Novelty, though these pieces were rarely marked and attribution is not certain. This example carries no maker\'s mark. It dates to the 1920s, following the 1922 copyright.

Condition is honest, played-with antique. One wheel is missing; three of the four are present and the axles remain in place. The original paint shows overall wear consistent with a century of handling, with rubbing and loss along the roof edges, platform corners and high points, exposing bare metal, and the gilt lettering is worn and only partly legible
