Antique Spanish Colonial Wooden Statue: Santa Teresa de Ávila - 19th Century For Sale

Antique Spanish Colonial Mexican Statue: Santa Teresa de Ávila - 19th CenturyItem Description
The Doctor of the Church: Saint Teresa was highly popularized in Mexico by scholars from the University of Salamanca. Because she was declared a Doctor of the Church, artists depicted her wearing the academic doctor's cap—which folk carvers in rural Mexico directly translated as a cleric's biretta.
The statue's specific design—where the robe terminates in a solid, rounded base that connects directly to a pedestal without showing feet—identifies the statue as a classic Spanish Colonial bulto de candelero (candlestick or framework statue) or a formal bulto de peana (pedestal statue). The seamless transition from dress to base underscores her stability as an unshakeable spiritual pillar.Age: Because the hat/biretta is part of the same continuous wooden carving as the head, this statue is highly likely an authentic antique example of a regional, high-art Spanish Colonial Mexican or 19th-century folk-art bulto de candelero. Please review all photos carefully as they serve as the primary description of the item's condition.
