Description: A primitive Southern Folk Pottery Whiskey Jug with Alkaline Glaze, 1-Quart capacity, Southeastern US origin, 19thC.
Wheel-thrown and wood-fired cylindrical form with rounded shoulder, tooled spout and applied strap handle.
Covered with a crude, drippy Alkaline Glaze in mostly olive, rust and brown tones. Brick-colored redware/earthenware body; base is unglazed.
Jug is unsigned. Tag on base notes a purchase in NC back in the 1970’s.
Condition: Good+ to Very Good overall with attractive form and decoration. Wonderful smaller display size! Imperfections are noted below:
Handle and spout show moderate in-use wear, notably on the left side.
Body with minor surface and handling wear; otherwise clean and undamaged. Inherent glaze, surface and firing imperfections noted for descriptive accuracy.
Base with expected wear and soiling, including rub, flakes and small perimeter chips, as shown.
Presents brilliantly with tremendous character and Folk Art appeal.
