This piece came from a family collection and was handmade by my late step-grandfather as part of his carving hobby. He commonly worked with animal bone and horn, though the exact material of this particular piece has not been identified or tested.
Measures approximately 4.25 inches long and displays detailed maritime scenes on both sides, including a sailing ship and a traditional whaling scene. The wider end is hollow with some chipping along the rim as pictured.
Exact material, maker and age are unknown. This piece has not been authenticated as genuine antique scrimshaw.
