Antique STAR Tobacco Plug Cutter Cast Iron General Store Advertising 1880s For Sale

Antique STAR tobacco plug cutter featuring heavy cast iron construction, original-looking red paint, raised STAR lettering with decorative stars, and the advertising slogan “SAVE THE TAGS” cast into the handle.

This countertop tobacco cutter was originally used in general stores and tobacco shops to cut compressed plugs of chewing tobacco. Dating to the late 19th century, approximately the 1880s–1890s, it is a distinctive piece of early American tobacco advertising and general store history.

The long operating handle moves up and down, and the cutting blade raises and lowers with the handle as intended. Actual cutting performance has not been tested.

The cutter retains an attractive aged appearance with substantial remnants of its red painted finish and clearly visible raised lettering. A collectible piece for antique tobacco advertising, general store, and primitive tool displays.

CONDITION

Antique condition with considerable age-related wear, paint loss, surface rust, oxidation, and accumulated patina. There are various areas of previous repair and a visible broken section of the cast iron base.

The handle operates up and down, raising and lowering the cutting blade. The mechanism has not been tested for actual tobacco cutting.

The repairs and casting damage are visible in the photographs. Sold in its present antique condition.
