Up for sale is an authentic late 19th century heavy cast iron Scandinavian style barrel "jail" padlock with key manufactured by Star Lock Works of Philadelphia, PA. This piece dates from the late 1870s to the 1880s and is a fantastic piece of American industrial hardware history. The shackle is stamped "PAT'D JUL 78", referencing the July 23, 1878 patent (#206,327) for the "captured shackle" mechanism. This design ensures that the shackle remains securely attached to the lock body when opened, pivoting smoothly on its long leg rather than detaching completely. The bottom plate features raised star logo. Measuring 3-1/4 inches high, this heavy duty size was historically used to secure railroad switches, heavy gates and prison passage doors, earning it the popular collector nickname of a "jailhouse lock."
Lock comes with a key & is in good working order. Shackle opens and pivots easily. Key turns slightly stiffly. Lock is in very good antique condition with natural dark iron patina & minimal oxidation consistent with age. No cracks or damage to the housing.
