Antique Chinese funerary or altar urn in the Qingbai style, possibly originating in the Song dynasty. Glazed ceramic vessel featuring a dragon in flight above robed seated figures in relief. Subtle celadon-toned glaze with rustic reddish foot.
When found, the interior contained residual burial clay, supporting its historic ritual use.
A striking decorative piece with authentic age and character.

AI summary:
This piece strongly exhibits the classic typological characteristics of a Southern Song Dynasty (1127–1279) funerary urn, often referred to as mingqi, though definitively authenticating it from photographs requires physical verification. It aligns closely with provincial kiln pieces produced for burial, but the prevalence of sophisticated modern reproductions means a few specific areas warrant closer tactile inspection.Form and Typology
The structural profile—a slender neck on an ovoid body, topped with a heavily frilled, scalloped collar—is textbook for Song burial vessels.
The applied relief decorations featuring a coiled dragon and a lower register of standing mourning figures or Daoist deities match standard period motifs.
The soft, slightly crude modeling of the applique figures is common in rapid, high-volume provincial kiln production, though it can also be a byproduct of modern silicone molding techniques.Glaze and Surface Mechanics
The olive-to-yellowish-green glaze shows extensive, deep crazing and a heavily degraded, matte surface. On authentic pieces, this happens naturally over centuries of soil burial.
Because modern reproductions frequently simulate this degradation using acid washes and rapid thermal shock, the piece should be inspected under magnification. Genuine burial wares typically have microscopic mineral deposits and deeply embedded soil accretions within the crazing lines that cannot be easily brushed away.Clay Body and Foot Construction
The unglazed lower base reveals a coarse, sandy clay body fired to a bright reddish-orange. This is expected oxidation where iron-rich clay was exposed during firing.
The wheel marks and flat foot are structurally sound, but the bright oxidation should be checked to ensure it isn\'t a superficial iron wash meant to artificially age a newer, lighter clay body.
When preparing pieces like this for potential retail inventory or restoration, examining the unglazed interior neck for continuous, natural throwing lines helps confirm hand-building versus slip-casting. Additionally, running a UV blacklight over the applied figures and the frilled collar can quickly rule out modern synthetic adhesives used in undisclosed repairs. A thermoluminescence (TL) test from a ceramic appraiser would be the only definitive way to confirm the century it was fired.
