- This antique 1846 Pennsylvania Dutch Fraktur Taufschein, a colored birth and baptismal certificate, was printed by G.S. Peters of Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. Gustav Sigismund Peters (1793–1847) was a prominent 19th-century printer based in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, widely recognized as America\'s first color printer. Operating in the region starting in 1827, his press is particularly famous for producing color-printed children\'s books, vibrant Taufscheine (birth and baptism certificates), and religious texts.
- The certificate records the birth of Henry Hoffman on July 9,1846, in Bethel Township, Lebanon County, Pennsylvania, to parents David and Elisabeth Hoffman and baptized by the Rev. Stine.
- The hand-coloring highlights the traditional Fraktur motifs, including two winged angels, one holding a wreath, the other a bird. The composition also features an American eagle with the \'E PLURIBUS UNUM\' motto, and charming depictions of birds perched on fruiting branches, along with various floral arrangements. The borders are intricately patterned. Spiritual verses are inscribed at the top and bottom of the central text block. The certificate is within a Birdseye Maple wooden frame.
- Measures – 15.75” x 12.75” within a frame of 18.5\"x 15.5\"x .25\"D
- Overall fair to good condition with wear consistent with age and use.Print has normal toning. Red & yellow ink dulled, but attractive. Hand written details are legible with a little staining around the ink writing.Upper Left Corner margin has sign of tear off before the print (see last photos).
- Simple wooden frameisnormally rubbed/scuffed around edges and corners; hanging wire in working order. Back has clippings circa 1980\'s of other Frakturs.Please note: we have not examined this print out of theframe.Please see photos and ask questions, if any, before purchasing.
