Antique Plains Indian painted parfleche envelope, circa 1880. Measuring approximately 26\" long and 14\" wide, this example is constructed from rawhide and has become quite stiff with age, as is typical of most surviving antique parfleche pieces.
The exterior is decorated with a traditional geometric design painted in red, yellow, blue, and green. The painted elements remain vibrant and well-defined, displaying only expected wear consistent with age and use. The piece has developed a nice patina.
Condition is excellent and original, with no damage noted. Please review all photographs carefully, as they are an important part of the description.
Attributed to the Indigenous peoples of the Northern Plains or Plateau regions, with stylistic elements often associated with traditions such as the Crow or Nez Perce. A fine example of Native American rawhide artistry from the late 19th century.
