ANTIQUE ROYAL AUSTRIA ROSE POMPADOUR BOWL
This listing features an antique serving bowl made by O. & E.G. (Oscar & Edgar Gutherz) Royal Austria in the lavish Rose Pompadour pattern, between 1889 and 1918. The Gutherz factory exported both decorated wares and large amounts of undecorated porcelain, known as "whitewall" to satisfy interest in amateur porcelain painting in America. German porcelain from this era was among the finest in the world and only the very wealthy could afford pieces like this. It is signed “Martin” on the face, and underneath is the O. E. & G. Royal Austria green stamp and the pattern in gold script. My guess is the Martin signature belonged to an early Gutherz factory artist and was not a personalized whitewall.
This size bowl is one of the hardest pieces to locate signed by this artist. It measures 10 inches in diameter by approximately 2 1/2 inches deep. Its scalloped shape, beaded detail, painting subject and style, as well as heavy 24kt accents are pure Edwardian sophistication. There are no major issues like cracks, crazing, stains, or chips. As far as minor flaws, they are all age-related and forgivable since this bowl is over 100 years old. There is one tiny spot in the green background, wear to the higher edges of the gold rim, and light scratches in the gold band. There are utensil marks in 2 spots on the porcelain side of the rim.
