Antique Victorian silverplate bride's basket or cake basket by Meriden B. Company (Meriden Britannia Company), pattern No. 1776, dating to approximately the 1880s / late 19th century.
An ornate American silverplate piece featuring a pedestal base, shallow circular basket and movable swing handle. The interior is decorated with opposing figural scenes depicting reclining mythological female figures riding fantastical lion- or serpent-like creatures, surrounded by elaborate flowers and foliage. The exterior border features additional embossed botanical decoration.
The underside bears the circular Meriden B. Company hallmark with balance scales and the number 1776. This is the factory pattern/model number and is not a date.
Please see measurement photos for approximate dimensions.
Good antique condition with substantial age-related surface wear, including scratches, scuffs, spotting, tarnish and patina, discoloration and areas of plating wear. Old scratched/engraved markings are also present on the underside. The swing handle remains securely attached and moves as intended.
A striking surviving example of late Victorian American silverplate, equally suited for display, collecting or use as a decorative accent.
