Collette in Amsterdam, New York. He designed a tiny, clever rivet system using an unthreaded screw, two metal washers, and a rubber ring to squeeze a leak shut mechanically.During World War II (1939–1945), Mendets transformed from a handy gadget into a vital patriotic necessity due to strict government metal rationing. To support the troops, the U.S. government halted the production of civilian consumer goods made from aluminum, copper, and iron. Homemakers literally could not buy new pots, pans, or kettles. If a aluminum pot developed a pinhole leak, the kitchen was down a vital tool.Because buying a replacement was impossible, the motto \"Don\'t Throw It Away – Mend It With Mendets\" became a national survival strategy. For just 15 cents, families could permanently patch their existing cookware, saving precious metals for tanks, ammunition, and aircraft.
