An attractive antique Japanese lacquered trinket/keepsake box dating circa 1900–1915, featuring a dark brown lacquered finish with finely executed gold and copper-tone decoration.

The lid is decorated with a bird, trailing foliage, leaves, fruit and stylized landscape motifs, surrounding a recessed glazed central window containing an old monochrome image of a group of Japanese women in traditional dress, several holding folding fans.

The box has a hinged lid, dark lacquered interior and decorative metal keyhole escutcheon. Its combination of Japanese pictorial lacquer decoration and inset period image gives it particularly strong display appeal. Comparable Japanese lacquer boxes with gilt birds and botanical motifs are documented from the Meiji and early 20th-century periods. Museums Victoria Collections
