PROTOXIDE OF IRONThis corresponds with the historically documented Nichols’ Elixir of Peruvian Bark & Protoxide of Iron, a 19th-century medicinal preparation associated with J.R. Nichols and later Boston pharmaceutical trade.The bottle displays wonderful early glass character, including bubbles, waviness, irregularities and a crude hand-finished appearance. It has a heavy rounded/applied-style lip and recessed rectangular panels.What makes this example particularly appealing is the original paper label still attached to the bottle. Although considerably deteriorated, enough remains to clearly identify the medicine, giving the bottle significantly more historical context than an unlabeled J.R.
