Antique Indian Islamic devotional token / ramatanka featuring a detailed representation of the Prophet's Mosque at Madinah (Medina).The architectural side depicts a mosque complex with central dome, towers/minarets, crescent and star, and a long arcade. Beneath the mosque is the inscription “Madinah Sharif” (Medina the Noble/Holy).The opposite side features Islamic calligraphy associated with the Kalima/Shahada and the traditional Sunni devotional design referencing the Four Rightly Guided Caliphs.These pieces belong to a fascinating group of Indian Islamic religious tokens or devotional medallions commonly referred to by collectors as ramatankas or “temple tokens.” They were produced as religious/devotional objects rather than circulating government coinage.DETAILS:
