Up for sale is a historically significant, personalized late-Victorian to early-20th-century American fraternal ceremonial sword with an exceptional regional connection. This blade was custom-manufactured for the Uniformed Rank (U.R.) of the Knights of Pythias by the premier regalia house, The M.C. Lilley & Co. of Columbus, Ohio.
HISTORICAL PROVENANCE:The blade features the original owner's name, "Horace Merritt," factory acid-etched in a beautifully frosted, elegant scroll panel. Historical records identify Horace Merritt as a prominent local defense attorney, political delegate, and dedicated lodge organizer heavily active in Joplin, Missouri (Jasper County) during the early 1900s. He notably served on the executive committee for the massive regional Pythian conventions held in Joplin.
SWORD FEATURES:-
- Guard Hardware: Intricately detailed cast brass guard and pommel. Features a stunning clamshell crossguard displaying a diamond crest framing a lily plant, flanked by the stylized letters "U" and "R" (Uniformed Rank).
- Grip: Ornate brass wire-wrapped grip over its original structural foundation, showing beautiful, honest age.
- Blade: Acid-etched bright steel featuring traditional knightly motifs and the sharp, legible maker's mark at the ricasso: "The M.C. Lilley & Co. Columbus, Ohio" (dating assembly between 1882 and 1925).
- Scabbard: Includes its original bright silver-toned steel scabbard with ornate brass suspension mounts and hanging rings fully intact.
