Antique Himalayan Jambati Singing Bowl – 10" – 3 lb 5 oz – Note D
Large antique Himalayan Jambati singing bowl of traditional hand-forged and hand-hammered copper-alloy construction. An impressive heavy example measuring approximately 10 inches in diameter and weighing 3 lbs 5 oz (approximately 1,500 grams).
The bowl displays extensive evidence of traditional hand working throughout. The walls and rim have noticeable organic variations in thickness and contour, with overlapping hammer work and irregularities inherent to the forging process. The plain hand-finished rim remains structurally sound.
Of particular interest is the remarkable exterior surface. The dark black-brown patina retains extensive areas of irregular laminar fissuring and localized surface delamination or "alligatoring." These features are integral to the worked metal surface and are consistent with extensive heating, forging, hammering, oxidation and long-term aging of traditionally manufactured copper alloy.
The exterior retains a deep mottled dark patina with exposed bronze highlights on raised and worn areas. The contrasting interior has a naturally worn golden-bronze surface showing extensive hand-working marks, scattered oxidation and small areas of green copper verdigris. The bowl has not been aggressively cleaned or polished, preserving the historic surfaces and forging characteristics.
Dating: Based upon its traditional construction, extensive hand forging and hammering, irregular wall and rim profile, surface fissuring/delamination, accumulated oxidation and wear, this bowl is attributed to the antique Himalayan Jambati tradition, probably late 18th to 19th century. The bowl is unmarked and without documented provenance, the precise date cannot be independently confirmed.
Acoustic Characteristics: The bowl produces a deep fundamental D with a long, powerful sustain and complex multi-tonal response. When played around the rim with a bare wooden striker, additional harmonic activity is heard in approximately the F–A range. In some modern sound-healing traditions, D is associated with the Sacral Chakra (Svadhisthana).
