Vintage Hay’s Hair-Health hair dressing bottle with its original cardboard box, an excellent early salon, barber shop and apothecary advertising display.
The set includes a rectangular amber glass bottle with embossed HAY’S lettering along the side, its original paper label and a cork stopper. The label identifies the product as Hay’s Hair-Health, manufactured by Standard Laboratories, Inc. of New York and St. Louis, successors to the Philo Hay Company.
The bottle label is marked Revision 1934, while the original box is marked Revision 1932, dating this presentation to the mid-1930s. The packaging advertises the product as a dressing for coloring gray or faded hair and retains its bold period typography, illustrated trademark and original $1.00 price.
The box states an average net weight of contents of 8 ounces. The bottle and box stand approximately 8 inches tall. The amber glass, illustrated labels and surviving packaging make this much more visually appealing than a loose bottle alone.
This is being sold strictly as a vintage collectible and decorative display piece. The contents have not been tested and should not be opened, handled internally or used.
Condition
Good vintage display condition with expected age-related wear.
The amber bottle remains intact with no obvious cracks or major chips. The original cork is present. The paper bottle label has age toning, light discoloration and minor edge wear but remains highly legible.
The original cardboard box shows creasing, softened corners, small tears, surface marks, staining and general handling wear. The top flaps are worn and partially open. Despite the wear, the graphics remain strong and the box displays very well alongside the bottle.
A wonderful piece of American beauty-shop history for an antique salon display, barber shop collection, apothecary cabinet, vanity arrangement or vintage advertising collection. It has survived from an era when the promise of youthful hair came sealed in amber glass, waiting nearly a century for its next place of honor.
