The lid features a hand-cut pictorial intarsia scene showing Mount Vesuvius with a dense eruption plume billowing into the sky, framed by an umbrella pine (Pinus pinea), a terracotta-roofed coastal villa, and a traditional lateen-rigged fishing boat (gozzo) on the bay. Souvenirs commemorating an active crater were in peak international demand following the catastrophic, widely publicized eruption of April 1872.THE \"GEESE IN THE VINEYARD\" MICRO-MARQUETRY BORDER:
Encircling the top and sides if the box is an ultra-fine, end-grain wooden micro-mosaic band. Rather than a generic geometric strip, the motif depicts an arched-neck goose feeding on ripe grape clusters among curling leafy vines (viticci).This pays homage to both Campania\'s legendary volcanic wine country (famous for Lacryma Christi) and the ancient Italian viticultural practice of releasing geese into post-harvest vineyards (oche in vigna) to weed and forage dropped fruit. Each tiny tessera is a microscopic rod of natural or dyed wood assembled in end-grain blocks—a hallmark of late 19th-century Sorrento stunning mastery.CONSTRUCTION & HARDWARE DETAILS:

Very good, untouched antique condition with rich, warm patina. The pictorial lid exhibits genuine age-related hairline veneer shrinkage fissures and light surface wear consistent with authentic 140+ year-old woodcraft.Hinges are firm and function smoothly.The micro-mosaic border is intact along the top and along the sides of the box with vibrant original wood dyes (coral, gold, and green). There are some edges and corners that have wood loss.
