The underside bears the printed Royal China Works Worcester / G & Co. / Established 1801 / England factory mark together with the date letter “H.” According to the Museum of Royal Worcester’s Grainger factory-mark records, the letter H corresponds to 1898.
Measuring approximately 5 inches wide and 3 inches tall, the bowl is formed almost entirely from intricate pierced and reticulated porcelain. The openwork decoration incorporates scrolling foliage, geometric piercing, and striking classical mask motifs around the sides. Four contrasting black ball feet support the bowl and provide an elegant visual accent against the cream-white porcelain.
Grainger became particularly celebrated for this type of technically demanding pierced porcelain. The Museum of Royal Worcester notes that Grainger’s pierced wares are characteristically curvilinear, with elaborate perforated patterns derived from specially designed forms.
The overall effect is remarkably delicate and lace-like, making this a fine example of late 19th-century Worcester decorative porcelain.
