This is a large 8 5/8-inch aqua example with a chunky hand-applied sloping collar lip, hinge-molded body, smooth base and excellent color. The bottle is bright, clean, and shiny with no haze, stain, chips, cracks, flakes, or repairs. The oversized applied lip and crude glass character make it a superb shelf example of a post-Civil War proprietary medicine.
Precise Date
Based on the hinge-mold construction, hand-applied sloping collar finish, smooth base, heavy aqua glass, and overall form, this bottle was most likely produced circa 1871-1876, with 1872-1874 being the strongest estimate.
The bottle falls squarely into the early post-Civil War proprietary medicine era before fully automatic bottle manufacture and before embossed medicine bottles became more standardized in the 1880s.
