Antique Dr Hugh Young Cystoscope American Cystoscope Makers Medical Oddities:
$279.99

This item is an antique cystoscope set bearing Dr. Hugh H. Young's name, manufactured by American Cystoscope Makers, Inc. of New York. Dr. Hugh Hampton Young (1870–1945) was the founding chief of urology at Johns Hopkins Hospital and is widely regarded as the father of modern American urology; he pioneered radical prostate surgery and developed several of the diagnostic instruments that bore his name. This set includes multiple nickel-plated brass telescopic components, a multi-port control valve assembly with knurled adjustment knobs and black composition handles, and the original cloth-covered electrical cord for the instrument's illumination lamp. Two brass plates are mounted inside the case lid: one identifying it as "Dr. Hugh H. Young's Cystoscope," and a second detailing lamp-replacement instructions for the cystoscope/urethroscope, both stamped "American Cystoscope Makers, Inc., 450 Whitlock Ave., New York, U.S.A."

Construction: Dark-finished wood carrying case with a fitted, compartmented interior, brass instrument mounts, two folding metal hasp latches, and rear hinges. Nickel-plated brass telescopic instrument components with black composition (early plastic) grips and knobs.

Dimensions: Case measures approximately 16 x 7 x 2.5 inches.

Condition:This is a genuine antique medical instrument set sold strictly as a collectible/display piece; not for medical use. The wood case shows honest age: an aged, mottled dark finish with scuffing, staining, and light water spotting on the lid. One of the two latch catches has a cracked/chipped wood mount where the hardware meets the case (visible split at the strike plate); the opposite latch is intact and functions normally. The hinges are sound and the lid opens and closes properly. Inside, the nickel plating on the instrument components shows light tarnish consistent with age, and all major components pictured, telescopic rods, the control valve assembly, cord, and both brass plates; are present and intact.

This set has not been tested for function and is sold as-is, as an untested antique.
