For sale are an antique Pair of Cheyenne Woman's Leggings and Moccasins, from circa 1890-1910.
The leggings are made from native tanned hide, still supple, rubbed with yellow ochre. The hide is partly sewn with thread. The beadwork is sinew sewn in a classic Cheyenne design, in bead colors white, translucent red (partly 'cut' beads), light blue, translucent navy (partly 'cut' beads), greasy yellow, bottle green, and facetted black beads.
The moccasins match nicely with the leggings and are likely a bit older (1890s) and also made of native tanned hide, sinew sewn with bead colors white, translucent bottle green, red-white-heart, black 'cut' beads, and light blue. Some places with missing beads. The inner cuff and the back of the right moccasin is missing a bit (gnawed by rodents?).
Although not originally made for each other, these moccasins and leggings match very nicely!
The leggings are each circa 18" long and at the bottom 5" wide.Provenance: the leggings came from the collection of Mike Kostelnik.
The moccasins are each circa 9 1/2" x 3 1/2".
