Antique Double Bag (Khorjin) — Caucasian or Kurdish Tribal, Sumak Flatweave, ca. Late 19th–Early 20th Century
A sturdy antique tribal double bag woven in sumak flatweave technique, with a kilim-woven back and gusset. Each pouch measures 18 inches square; the piece measures approximately 6 inches in depth when folded closed. The design vocabulary — horizontal registers of geometric diamond medallions with hooked S-scroll surrounds — is consistent with Caucasian (Azerbaijani/Shahsavan) or Northwestern Iranian Kurdish production.
Construction: Sumak flatweave face panels; kilim-woven back and gusset. Original braided wool center closure cord intact and functional.
Design: Repeating geometric diamond medallion registers in horizontal bands, with running hooked border motifs. Characteristic Caucasian/Kurdish tribal geometric vocabulary.
Colors: Two panels show differential coloration — the upper panel has more muted, faded tones (rose-brown, faded orange, grey); the lower panel retains stronger pink/magenta and burnt orange. This differential is consistent with decades of uneven light exposure and adds to the authentic aged character.
