Breidenbach & Co. London Perfume Trio in Embossed Cherub Case

Three matching glass perfume bottles by Breidenbach & Co., London, most likely 1890-1900, cased and complete. Full decorative lavender and gold paper labels, identifying concentrated floral extracts in Wallflower, Opoponax, and Parma Violet. Each fragrance bottle has a matching lobed glass stopper. Fitted presentation case covered in embossed green and white decorative paper with floral scrollwork and a central cherub.

The case has a pink silk or rayon fabric lining with cord edging, fitted bottle recesses, and a gilt Breidenbach B device inside the lid. All three bottles seat well in their recesses. The case footprint measures approximately 175 × 135 mm (6.9 × 5.3 inches). This is a rare piece of vogue and sets like this do not often surface.

Condition
  • Case remains structurally very strong, with a sturdy hinge. The lid closes squarely, and the front clasp works well. The clasp has oxidation and age-related discoloration.
  • Exterior paper has scattered staining and discoloration across the green and white areas, with rubbing around the corners and edges. Most of the paper covering remains intact and feels solid.
  • Paper loss and a split at the lower left front of the case. Additional loss on the left side, toward the right of its upper half, with losses to the raised scrollwork above and below. A few areas of scrollwork on the lid are rubbed thin.
  • Staining and wear around the edges, with a few small areas of glued paper lifting slightly.
  • Interior fabric has rubbing where the stoppers contact the lid lining. The lining otherwise remains sturdy, and all bottles seat securely in the fitted recesses.
  • No cracks in the glass bottles. Two stoppers lift out freely; the third is tight and has not been forced.
  • Front labels remain clear. Neck labels are fully legible but show wear. The small trademark labels on the backs are generally intact.
  • Remnants of original tissue or paper remain around the bottle necks, with partial ribbon remnants on two stoppers.
  • One bottle has darker residue inside; the other two are relatively free of residue. No remaining scent, pleasant or otherwise, was detected.
  • Base has surface wear and an attached paper dealer tag.

Historical Notes

Breidenbach traces its origins to Aaron Page\'s London perfumery, established in 1793. Francis Henry Breidenbach received a royal warrant in 1841. By 1855, the firm was advertising three-fragrance boxed assortments, including a Sportsman\'s Perfumery selection of Newmarket Jockey Club, Royal Hunt, and Yacht Club Nosegay. Boxed perfume trios were therefore an established part of the firm\'s trade well before this set was produced. The business was sold to Rimmel in 1930. This set is solidly Victorian in design, construction, and finish, though it is a not a common display item we can match to other examples, so the dating age range may skew a bit earlier/later.
