Rebekah becomes pregnant with twins, and the first to be born is Esau, followed by his brother Jacob. Esau is therefore the eldest. He is red and hairy, wearing like the fur of an animal.

As Esau grows up, he becomes an experienced and adventurous hunter, while his younger brother Jacob is solitary and thoughtful. Isaac prefers Esau, while Rebekah prefers Jacob2. One day, Esau came home hungry from one of his hunts. Jacob, who is preparing the kitchen, only agrees to give him food on the condition that he cedes his birthright to him. Esau accepts3. Esau is then called Edom4,5,6.
Before the blessing given to his brother Jacob by his father Isaac7, Esau, aged forty years old8, married Ada, daughter of Elon the Hittite9, also called Basemath8, who gave him a son called Eliphaz10,11, firstborn of Esau12, then married Judith, the daughter of Beeri the Hittite8. They are painful towards Isaac and Rebekah13. When Isaac, who has become old and blind, wants to bless Esau before dying, he asks him to go hunting to prepare a meal for him, so that he can enjoy blessing him. Esau complies and goes hunting. But Jacob, helped by his mother, appears first before his father, who blesses him, thinking he is dealing with Esau, and makes him head of his siblings and heir to his property14,15.
When Esau returns from his hunt and presents himself before his father, it is too late. Isaac cannot withdraw the blessing given to Jacob. He still blesses Esau, and prophesies to him that he will free himself from Jacob. Esau waits for Isaac to die so he can kill Jacob but, thanks to Rebekah, he goes to live with his uncle Laban to marry one of his daughters.
