Beautiful antique gilt wood picture frame dating to approximately the 1920s–1930s, with a wonderful understated Art Deco-era design.
This frame has a warm aged gold finish with subtle red, green and darker undertones showing through the raised decoration. The molding features repeating elongated geometric cartouches bordered by narrow bands of carved/molded ornament. I especially like that it has plenty of decorative character without being excessively ornate, making it suitable for everything from an antique oil painting or portrait to a modern piece of art.
The frame fits a 14" x 18" image/artwork and can be displayed horizontally or vertically. Based on the measurements, the exterior is approximately 20" x 16".
The frame retains an old hanging wire. The back shows its traditional wood construction along with remnants of old paper backing around the perimeter, further contributing to its authentic aged character.
The finish has naturally aged over the decades with scattered rubbing, small chips, finish loss, darkening and surface wear. There are also remnants of old backing paper on the reverse. I do not see any major separation at the mitered corners, and the frame remains very attractive and displayable. The worn gold, muted colors and exposed undertones give it exactly the kind of patina that works beautifully with antique and vintage artwork.
A great frame for a 1920s/1930s painting, portrait, landscape, period print or other 14x18 artwork, and an attractive choice for an eclectic gallery wall, Parisian apartment, Art Deco or traditional interior.
Fits 14" x 18" artwork. Approximately 20" x 16" overall.
