This 18-19th-century German hunting sword, or Hirschfänger, represents a storied tradition of European venery where such sidearms served both as functional tools for the dispatch of game and as symbols of status within forestry and hunting guilds. While many examples are found in shorter lengths, this longer variant is reminiscent of the hangers used by professional foresters and officials during the mid-to-late 1800s. The piece features a dark hardwood grip adorned with brass oval inlays and an S-curved crossguard typical of the period's utilitarian aesthetic. It comes with a leather scabbard, but I believe it to be newer than the sword itself. Historically, these swords were often produced in the renowned blade-making center of Solingen and were carried as a standard part of the formal hunting attire. This particular specimen shows the honest wear of age and utility; the brass guard is ever so slightly loose, and the long steel blade has some bends in it, reflecting its life as a functional field tool rather than a purely decorative cabinet piece. Despite these structural signs of use, the presence of its original leather scabbard preserves its historical integrity as a classic example of German craftsmanship from the 18-19th century.
