Hot Pink, Tall Boots & Hollywood Cowboys
Two cowboys against a blazing pink background. Purple and green shirts. Neckerchiefs, broad-brimmed hats, tooled leather, and enough attitude to command an entire wall.
Some vintage objects quietly evoke their era. This pink writing tablet makes an entrance.
Offered together are two original midcentury cowboy writing tablets, each measuring approximately 10" long x 7 7/8" wide, both retaining unused, blue-lined writing sheets. Their matching size, red top bindings, cardboard backs, and corresponding construction strongly suggest production by the same manufacturer during the same period.
The pink tablet features named Western television stars Jackie Coogan and Russell Hayden, with their printed facsimile signatures. Its companion presents a sharply dressed cowboy against a vivid yellow background, making the pair a wonderfully bold display.
Dating to approximately 1952–1955, these are delightful survivors of the era when Hollywood cowboys rode straight from movie screens and television sets onto children’s everyday possessions.
The Pink One: Pure Cowboy Camp
That extraordinary pink background transforms a conventional Western publicity image into something wonderfully theatrical.
The saturated color, coordinated costumes, confident poses, and oversized cowboy accessories give this tablet tremendous appeal for collectors of camp Americana, queer décor, Hollywood imagery, and adventurous midcentury design.
Imagine it framed in a downtown New York apartment, displayed above a writing desk, or tucked into a gallery wall among vintage photographs and unexpected treasures. It has the presence to hold its own.
A little Hollywood. A little honky-tonk. A lot of pink.
The Men On The Cover
Jackie Coogan (1914–1984)
Long before becoming the beloved Uncle Fester on television’s The Addams Family, Jackie Coogan was one of Hollywood’s earliest great child stars. His performance opposite Charlie Chaplin in The Kid (1921) made him internationally famous.
His later struggle to recover his childhood earnings helped inspire the protective legislation known as the Coogan Law. His career stretched from silent cinema to familiar television comedy—and, in between, included a stint in cowboy boots.
In Cowboy G-Men (1952–1953), Coogan played government agent Stoney Crockett. The pink tablet captures that less familiar Western chapter of a remarkably varied career.
Russell Hayden (1912–1981)
Russell “Lucky” Hayden became a familiar face to Western audiences as Lucky Jenkins, riding alongside William Boyd in the popular Hopalong Cassidy films.
He subsequently starred in Western features and moved into television. In Cowboy G-Men, he played Pat Gallagher, partnering with Coogan’s Stoney Crockett.
Together, the two actors connect this modest piece of stationery to the larger world of Saturday matinee adventures and early television Westerns.
Made To Be Used - Remarkable To Find Unused
These tablets were everyday paper goods: bought for writing, carried about, filled with schoolwork or doodles, and eventually used up.
Their survival with unused writing sheets is a large part of their charm. The blue lines still wait for words that never arrived. The covers retain their brilliant pink and yellow, and the pair still presents as a coordinated glimpse of midcentury childhood.
More than seventy years later, objects intended to be consumed have become objects worth preserving.
