Antique 1921-1925 Todd Protectograph Check Writer For Sale

The Todd Protectograph Company manufactured mechanical check writers in Rochester, New York, starting in the early twentieth century. These heavy steel devices were engineered to prevent financial fraud by shredding paper fibers and forcing indelible ink deep into the check stock. Office workers in banks, corporate headquarters, and small businesses operated them daily to safeguard payrolls and accounts payable against malicious alteration. As electronic banking and computer-generated checks gradually took over administrative routines in the late twentieth century, these mechanical protectors became obsolete.

Operators selected the numerical values using the sliding levers on top, inserted a blank check into the front carriage, and turned the side crank to emboss and ink the text. The distinctive shredded script made it nearly impossible for fraudsters to wash away or alter the written amounts without destroying the paper entirely. This ingenious design established a new standard for corporate security and remains a fascinating example of early office machinery.
