Condition description

Antique 1901 Villeroy & Boch Mettlach No. 2692 “Drinker and Hostess” 3-liter master stein. The stein displays beautifully but is not damage-free. There are two tiny visible vertical hairline cracks at the upper neck beneath the pewter lid rim that appear to be glazing cracks and not full cracks. The raised ceramic lid decoration has several small chips/losses. A dark brown stain or deposit is present at the bottom of the interior. Pewter shows age-related oxidation, darkening and surface wear. Lid, hinge and thumb lift are present and operational. Please review all photographs carefully for exact condition. The piece shows beautifully.

Offered is a large and impressive antiqueVilleroy & Boch Mettlach No. 2692 “Drinker and Hostess” master beer stein, produced in1901.

This substantial3-liter steinfeatures an elaborate tavern scene with a seated gentleman, a standing hostess and a musician playing a stringed instrument. The central scene is framed by architectural columns, grain, hop vines and richly molded ornamental borders.

The upper and lower sections are decorated in raised relief with hops and foliage. The elaborate handle carries matching applied leaf decoration.

The original pewter-mounted ceramic lid is decorated with raised hop leaves and cones and a central floral medallion. The ornate pewter thumb lift features a detailed winged or allegorical figure.

Collector references identify No. 2692 as the large master stein corresponding to the smaller Mettlach No. 2693.
