This medal is from the vastestate collection of Catholic Bishop George Guertin. He was a collector of rareoriginal Vatican mint medals.
This medal is 1.5 inches long, weighs six grams, made of bronze,and was touched to the sarcophagus of the saint over one hundred years ago (accordingto the customs of that period). It is a third-class relic for personal devotion.It dates from approximately 1775-1825.
The renowned Sanctuary of the Madonna di Montenero, afamous Benedictine Abbey, is a noted pilgrimage site. Apart from the effigy ofOur Lady of Montenero, the shrine also houses the incorrupt remains of Blessed Julius.
Julius never wanted to be ordained to the priesthood andasked his Superiors to bury him under the pavement of Our Lady\'s chapel, sothat pilgrims would pass over his vault, as if he was a great sinner, trampledunderfoot by everyone.
He died on July 8, 1601. Twenty years later, in 1621,when the church pavements were undergoing restorations, Julius’ body was found,remarkably preserved, and even today, over three and half centuries later, hisremains, preserved in a glass sarcophagus, are still visibly incorrupt.
This is also a medal dedicated to Santa Maria diMontenero (Our Lady of Grace of Montenero), the patron saint of Tuscany,venerated at the Sanctuary of Montenero in Livorno, Italy.
