Unusual late Victorian standing photo album and combination writing desk dating to 1895, featuring green patterned velvet, ornate brass-tone floral mounts, a beveled mirror, standing support, hidden writing compartment, brass letter or paper holder and glass inkwell with brass fitting. The interior contains antique portrait photographs, which will remain with the album, including a cabinet photograph marked F.W. Edwards, Barberton, Ohio. A surviving label reads “Patented July 23, 1895. Other Patents Pending.” This patented design is documented as a combined album and writing desk associated with W. A. Holman of Philadelphia. Condition: Antique condition with substantial age and wear. Velvet is faded, discolored and worn, particularly around the bottom. One side of the upper hook/clasp is broken. Mirror has discoloration. Interior binding is detached and the photo pages are loose. Glass and brass inkwell is complete and unbroken but is no longer attached to the base. Brass paper/letter holder remains attached and is in very good condition. Interior album pages show wear, edge loss and age-related deterioration.
