Antique 189421.5\"Ansonia Troubadour Clock Statue
-Marked and Cast in Bronzed Spelter
A monumental 1894 Ansonia “Troubadour” figural sculpture, standing an extraordinary 21.5 inches tall and weighing nearly 14 pounds, with Ansonia’s original manufacturing mark and the number 1003 preserved beneath the stool.
Created for Ansonia’s elaborate Troubadour mantel clock, the seated musician was produced as the clock’s figural companion and was offered in period finishes including silver and “Japanese Bronze.” This example corresponds to the darker Japanese Bronze treatment.
The figure is cast in spelter, a zinc-alloy metal commonly used in Ansonia’s late-19th-century figural clocks, with the bronze-toned surface finish giving the sculpture its deep, richly aged appearance.
The Troubadour is depicted seated with a stringed instrument and dressed in an elaborate historicist costume. Exceptional detail appears throughout the face, curled hair, puffed sleeves, jewelry, layered garments, hands, instrument, footwear, drapery, and heavily ornamented stool.
Its scale is difficult to appreciate from photographs alone. Measuring approximately 21.5 inches tall, 14 inches wide, and 7.25 inches deep, and weighing 13 lb 14.4 oz, this is not a small mantel ornament. It has the physical presence of a substantial freestanding sculpture and commands attention even when displayed independently of the clock for which the design was created.
The underside of the stool bears Ansonia’s distinctive A manufacturing trademark within its geometric device, together with the number 1003. This concealed mark provides direct manufacturer identification and is an important point of distinction from the many unmarked later copies and reproduction Troubadour figures encountered on the secondary market.
Standalone original Troubadour figures are known today. Some survive independently of their clocks, while others were retained after the clock portion was damaged, discarded, or otherwise separated from the figural component. The extraordinary level of sculptural detail and sheer scale of the figure make it easy to understand why these examples were preserved and collected in their own right.
