Up for sale is a genuinely unique and rare 19th-century American folk art piece dated to the Civil War era.
This item consists of a solid, thick, and very rigid dark stone backing plate. The front is decorated with an authentic antique 1/6 plate stamped brass photo mat frame. The central dark stone surface has been personalized with a beautiful hand-carved folk art inscription that reads: "CARVED 1861 G. RIED".
The letters are physically engraved deep into the rigid stone matrix and highlighted with an antique gold-toned pigment. 1861 marks the exact beginning of the American Civil War, making this a fascinating historical keepsake or trench-art style curiosity piece.
Material & Construction Note:
The backing material is completely rigid, thick, and very hard to the touch (feels like natural antique stone or slate). Due to its age and because we want to be 100% transparent, we cannot scientifically test the exact mineral composition, so it is being sold simply as a solid stone artifact.
Size:
- Measures approximately 2.5 inches wide by 2 inches tall (Standard 1/6 plate dimensions).
Condition:
Authentic antique condition with beautiful 160+ year old patina. The brass frame shows natural tarnish and aging. The thick dark stone base is structurally completely solid. There is a visible gap and minor separation between the stamped brass foil edge and the stone backing as detailed in the close-up profile photos. The carved lettering remains exceptionally sharp, clean, and perfectly legible.
A true one-of-a-kind oddity for collectors of Civil War era history, 19th-century Americana, or primitive folk art. Sold strictly as-is based on the provided photos. Ships securely packed.
