What a find! This is a beautifully framed poem written on paper in 1812, simply titled \"Presented with a rose to Miss Anica Preble.\" The poem is romantic, and has a lot of charisma!
While I don\'t have the exact history of this piece as it is not signed, my research has helped me figure out what I think is the story behind this beautiful little piece. Thomas Barlow (1793-1859) was an American student of law who moved to France during the early 1800s to help his uncle who was Minister to France at the time. During this time, he met Miss Frances Anica Preble, a post-Revolution France figure who was friends with Lafeyette and other big names of the day (including members of Napoleon\'s family). While vacationing at a friend\'s summer home, Miss Preble met Mr. Barlow and I believe that\'s where this lovely letter came from! The couple married in 1817 and later moved to Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania....which makes sense because...
I found this framed letter at a consignment sale in the suburbs of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania!
This story along with other research about Anica, her sister Harriet, and the Barlow\'s really lead me to believe that this letter was part of their love story. I don\'t have the means to authenticate this, but I believe it\'s a beautiful piece that made its way through the generations and somehow into my hands. And hopefully, into yours!
This would make a fantastic gift for anyone looking for a lovely, romantic gift that combines history with a flourish of romance. What more could you ask for?
