This is a particularly unusual surviving example of early dental craftsmanship. The partial consists of three artificial teeth mounted to an elaborate hand-worked metal framework with individually formed curved clasps that would have secured the appliance around the wearer\'s remaining natural teeth.
The teeth appear consistent with antique porcelain/mineral artificial teeth, materials well documented in 19th-century dentistry.
The framework has the appearance of silver, and silver is historically documented in antique dental appliances of this period. There are no silver hallmarks or other identifying marks that I can find, and the metal has not been professionally tested, so I am unable to confirm its silver content with certainty. It is therefore being described as silver based upon its appearance and the historical use of silver in comparable antique dental work, rather than as a guarantee of metal purity.
One particularly interesting area of the framework exhibits a gold/brass-colored tone, visible in the photographs. Whether this represents a different dental alloy, solder, plating, an old repair, or simply surface coloration is unknown.
What makes this piece especially appealing is its construction. This was not simply a mass-produced object—the framework was formed and fitted for an individual mouth. The sweeping clasps, thin shaped plate and three fitted teeth give it an almost sculptural quality. Viewed today, it is as much an example of early precision metalworking and craftsmanship as it is an artifact of dental history.
No effort has been made to clean, polish or otherwise alter this unique piece. It remains exactly as found, retaining its original oxidation, discoloration, wear and age-related patina.
