OVERVIEW: Here’s an antique stickpin indicating membership in Morningside College’s Adelphian Society. The emblem is made of 10K gold and the original stem is white metal. It features the organization’s emblem, which reads (in very fine hand-engraved lettering):

The Adelphians—a gentlemen\'s literary society that had a strong focus on debate—was formed on Nov. 4, 1901 with 25 charter members. \"Carpe diem” was their motto. According to a publication of Morningside College, the society’s pins first appeared on April 14, 1902. These earliest pins would have been made for the founding members and this stickpin might be one such piece; it’s unusual for a society pin to be entirely handmade and hand-engraved!
