Angelita Sanchez Santa Clara Pueblo Blackware Pottery Vase – Signed – 4.5”
Up for consideration is an authentic Native American blackware pottery jar by the highly regarded artisan Angelita Sanchez (1927-1993) of the San Ildefonso Pueblo, New Mexico. This piece stands as a fine example of the historic Pueblo black-on-black ceramic tradition.
Artist Lineage & Significance: Angelita Sanchez came from one of San Ildefonso's premier pottery families. She was the granddaughter of Nicolasa Pena, and sister to the celebrated painter Gilbert Atencio and potter Helen Gutierrez. Her distinct black-on-black work is collected for its exceptional forms and design structures that remain independent of the Martinez family style.
Design & Craftsmanship: A beautiful, taller ovoid jar form featuring a classic rolled rim. A bold, matte-finish geometric feather-and-band design sharply encircles the upper shoulder, contrasting elegantly against a deeply polished, mirror-like jet-black body. The underside features the artist's clear incised script signature: "Angelita Sanchez." Likely mid-20th century.
Dimensions: Approx. 4.5 “high x 5” diameter.
Condition: Excellent vintage condition with a strong, radiant stone-polished finish. Free of chips, cracks, or repairs. Please review all high-resolution photos carefully, as they form an essential part of the item description.
