This is one of two family photo albums from the family of John Jarvis was the admiral of the royal fleet. There are photographs of images of him in the album and some of the photographs are identified in pencil on the bottom.

There are a total of 44 CDV photographs. Not all photographs have been identified and not all photographs have been pictured in this listing because I’m limited on how many I can post. There are two or three that are missing from the pages, but there’s also some loose. I have not removed any photographs from this album. This is complete from the estate and I have not removed anything. This is a fresh estate find.

Jervis was also recognised by both political and military contemporaries as a fine administrator and naval reformer.[4]AsCommander-in-chiefof theMediterranean, between 1795 and 1799 he introduced a series of severestanding ordersto avertmutiny. He applied those orders to both seamen and officers alike, a policy that made him a controversial figure. He took hisdisciplinariansystem of command with him when he took command of theChannel Fleetin 1799. In 1801, asFirst Lord of the Admiralty, he introduced a number of reforms that, though unpopular at the time, made the Navy more efficient and more self-sufficient. He introduced innovations, includingblock making machineryatPortsmouth Royal Dockyard. St Vincent was known for his generosity to officers he considered worthy of reward, and his swift and often harsh punishment of those he felt deserved it.

Jervis\' entry in theOxford Dictionary of National Biographyby P. K. Crimmin describes his contribution to history: \"His importance lies in his being the organiser of victories; the creator of well-equipped, highly efficient fleets; and in training a school of officers as professional, energetic, and devoted to the service as himself.\"[5]
