Authentic glass globe which was a common sight at New York City Subway Entrances during the 1960’s - 1980's. They were mounted on a pylon or pole and illuminated with a different color bulb signifying the stations hours of operation, and whether it was a token booth or not. Most of these were destroyed by vandals who smashed them. The Transit Authority replaced them with a less expensive and less ornate hard plastic version which were more resistant to the vandalism.
They are starting to put glass fixtures again at locations in midtown and other areas where there is more foot traffic, however the new ones arent as nice, they are simply round glass globes with various colors. This globe is made of a thick frosted glass similar to a porcelain, but transparant to be illuminated from within. This globe has the authentic Transit Authority decal. I have seen another of these globes at the New York City Transit Museum, but theirs doesn't have the real decal, their decal is all dark blue, notice that this globe has the real one which is a split baby blue and midnight blue 'M'.
The decals are in good shape, some have some marks on them due to the fact they braved the elements of being in service in New York City, this is to be expected. Please look at the pictures, I'm sure you'll agree this is in very good shape. Measures 10" on each side, and 12" from top to bottom. The last 2 pictures show them installed at subway stations, some where the decal appears gone.
