Located in Northern Middle Tennessee, each piece is selected for its individuality and aesthetics. Unsurpassed, each piece is a testament to the beauty of nature.Crinoids consist of a cup (called a calyx). Arms attach to the cup. Most crinoids had stems (called columns), which is connected to the cup at one end, and a holdfast (Roots) at the other.
Holdfasts are the attachment structures of crinoids, (Roots). Some crinoids attached to the sea floor, while others attached to other objects, even other crinoids.
Crinoid holdfasts had many different sizes and shapes to help them anchor on different substrates in different marine environments. Some of these shapes suggest permanent attachment through the life of the crinoid, while others suggest the possibility of detachment and reattachment if disturbed. Some crinoids may have had different types of holdfasts and different types of holdfasts at different stages of their lives. These are the types of holdfasts Discoidal- cups and cones, Grapnel- looks like a grappling hook, Tree-like roots, Tapering/creeping- roots, and Coiling- around something else.
Multiple holdfasts on one bedding plane (like this one) is uncommon to possibly rare. The slab preserving what appears to be several growth stages in one place, This is unusual and scientifically more interesting than a single specimen.
This kind of preservation paleontologists call an assemblage or attachment surface. Assemblages can tell us about how crinoids actually lived together on the ancient seafloor, not just what individual animals looked liked.A fossil hash plate (or death plate) is a sedimentary rock packed densely with a mix of fragmented or whole prehistoric fossils. These plates serve as a permanent snapshot of ancient marine environments where crinoids, brachiopods, bryozoans, and horn corals accumulated on the seafloor. In this case these are Crinoid root impressions. These impressions are the Tree Like and Tapering/Creeping Radices (Roots).
Composition: Typically made of limestone, shale or coquina, ahash plate are compressed layers containing a literal hash of fossilized remains, most commonly crinoid stems, brachiopods, and bryozoans. Less common you might find fragments of corals, bivalves or trilobites. Again these are Crinoid root impressions.
Formation: Oftenforms when a localized event (like a sudden storm or shift in water currents) washes debris into one area, or simply represents the slow accumulation of skeletal remains over time.
Scientific Value: Paleontologists use fossil plates to study ancient biodiversity and reconstruct the ecology of prehistoric ecosystems.
Age and Geology:These plates are from the Middle to Late Ordovician period. This was around 450 Million years ago, a time when Middle Tennessee was covered by a shallow warm tropical sea.
